Early History: The Ohlone Native American tribe originally inhabited the region where Piedmont is situated.
1870: The land that would later become Piedmont, was purchased by a wealthy group of San Francisco residents who named it after the Piedmont region in Italy. The intention was to create an exclusive residential community away from busy San Francisco.
1907: Piedmont officially became a city and was developed as an affluent community with large homes, open spaces, and parks. It attracted prominent businessmen, politicians, and professionals – in other words, wealth.
1920: The PUSD (Piedmont Unified School District) was established in 1920 and consistently ranks among the top school districts in California.
1923: Piedmont became a charter city
